The shift to the left by the Democratic Party in the last elections may have caused a percentage of the Latino vote in the United States to unexpectedly turn towards Republicans, particularly those who left countries ruled by regimes that declare themselves socialist, such as the Venezuela of Nicolás Maduro or the Cuba of the Castros.
Recent statistics show that there was a turn to the Republican Party by a minority of Latinos across the country during the 2020 election, particularly among Cubans and non-Cubans in South Florida, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
Although the Democrats won – as they usually do in election after election – the Latino vote by a 2 to 1 ratio, Trump’s party added votes in that population despite maintaining an anti-immigrant and nationalist rhetoric that, in fact, should have chased away that vow.
